Women’s clothes have evolved in many ways over the years. For example, in the Inca and Saxon cultures, women made long garments of linen or wool that were wrapped around their bodies. They also spun and wove cloth in order to create items such as nightgowns, jumpsuits, and scarf covers.

Saxon women wore long linen garments

During the Anglo-Saxon period, women wore long linen garments. They were primarily responsible for spinning and weaving. The fabric was often spun from flax or sheep wool. The material was commonly dyed with woad leaves or greenweed. The underclothes were typically undyed linen, which would have needed regular washing.

Cloaks, capes, and mantles were also worn. They were fastened to the clothing with brooches or belts. The cloaks were often rectangular in shape and knee length.

Viking women spun and wove cloth

Throughout Viking and medieval history, women spun and wove cloth. They provided the fabric for homes and clothing, and they helped build the North Atlantic economy. However, they have often been stereotyped as domestic workers. In recent years, the textile historian Michele Hayeur Smith has made a significant contribution to understanding this ancient art form.

Hayeur Smith studied the archaeological record of Iceland in the 1990s. She has also surveyed museums and archaeological sites to collect ancient textiles and cloth fragments. Her research has been instrumental in showing that the Vikings would have been unable to expand their knowledge of the world without women’s weaving.

Aztec women wore wraparound skirts

The textiles of the Incas were highly decorative. They had geometric patterns. They were made of natural dyes extracted from plants and mollusks. Their designs had no figurative representations of themselves or their rituals.
